Thousands of poor Brazilians were evicted from their homes to build multimillion-dollar World Cup stadiums that may never be used again.
On June 4, 10,000 protesters belonging to Brazil’s Homeless Workers’ Movement shut down a major highway leading to Arena Corinthians. Their demands included more government spending on transportation, health, education, and low-income housing. |
They call their occupation "The People's Cup" and point out that the nearly half a billion dollars that went into building the "FIFA quality stadium" next door could have been used to combat poverty or improve healthcare.
