Victor As a nation that prides its self on being the best, it’s hard to believe that such ignorance can still be found, the ignorance of ignoring a problem that can cause millions of problem to all of human kind. The topic of deforestation is not well known to most people. It’s mostly because the problem gets overshadowed by other problems that are closer to us. Deforestation mostly takes place way out of society. In places were people are still not as civilized. But if you look around the problem seems to come closer. As timed passes more wood is needed and the forest can’t keep up. According to an article in saveamericasforests.org, “For decades, the U.S. Forest Service has deliberately clear cut millions of acres of National Forests, selling off the logs to international timber corporations at bargain basement prices”[1]. The significance of killing animals, habitats , and mother nature for money can not be overstated. So how much money is mother nature worth? Many people don’t see the side of corporations. Corporations that only care for money and nothing else. The sad truth is that corporations like Home Depot, Menards, and FIFA are one of many industrial corporations that have been the deciding factor of deforestation in the United States. These massive corporations seem to find it easy and a lot cheaper to get wood from far lands were the forest are basically untouched by humans. This is made possible by weak laws. According to Alexis Dziedziech a writer in Nonviolentprotest.org he sates in his article “environmental groups organized protests against Home Depot, the world’s largest do-it-yourself hardware and supply store. The protests were in response to the purchasing and selling of old-growth wood (OGW), or wood from endangered, never before forested regions”[2]. This has been happening for some time and still to this day nothing has been done to permanently stop these corporations that kill mother nature without hesitation. Many people find it easy (including me) to support corporations like The Home Depot, Menards, and FIFA. It only takes one simple step, that step is buying from them. It can be easy to just buy the things you need without thinking of all the damage that piece of metal, wood, or plastic has made towards pollution. This is why organizations like WWF are trying to teach people of how damaging these monopoly like corporations can be. As stated by WWF ( world wild life), “WWF also provides guidance on best practices related to legality and responsible sourcing to hundreds of companies around the world, including in the US, and supports an alliance that monitors the status of the remaining natural forests”[3]. With help like organizations like these the problem of deforestation is growing awareness and is seen as a problem that demands assistance. · [1] "Crisis in America's Forests." Nathan A 10 percent loss of canopy qualifies for this term. United States deforestation has caused the destruction of virgin forests by 90 percent since 1600. At the rate of deforestation currently in the United States, only one-fourth of the forests standing today will be standing in 70 years. In the US, people are bribed to get out of their home into a new location for their trees. The only thing that people see when trees are cutdown is nothing but money, because of the empty lots that can be sold, cattle farming that could be done. What people are doing is joining organizations that are with the US nation which are called Greenpeace and WWF. What greenpeace does is let people get involved by letting them be part of this organizations they are in all types of protection whether its in global warming, rainforest, and protecting oceans. In my opinion i would consider this to be a very different topic to many others, because its a topic that either benefits or worstened the situations. Deforestation has many negative effects on the environment. The most dramatic impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. Seventy percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. Deforestation also drives climate change. Forest soils are moist, but without protection from sun-blocking tree cover they quickly dry out. Trees also help perpetuate the water cycle by returning water vapor back into the atmosphere. Trees also play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming. This is why this is different situation then anyother because its a event that has happend for a long time and is still occuring. |
